Glossary

AI search and visibility terms, defined plainly.

This glossary defines the terms KC AIO uses across its services and articles, in the sense we use them. Each entry states the definition first, then how it applies to the work. The vocabulary of AI search is still settling; where a term is contested, we say which reading we follow.

All terms

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)

AEO is the practice of making a page's most useful answer explicit, verifiable, and easy for a person or an answer system to extract.

It applies to questions that resolve with a direct response: definitions, eligibility, instructions, comparisons with a clear decision rule. AEO rewards descriptive headings, plain definitions, visible evidence, and consistency with the rest of the organization's public information. It is one lens within AIO. See the plain-English guide.

AI Overviews and AI Mode

AI Overviews and AI Mode are Google Search features that generate a synthesized answer above or instead of the traditional list of results.

Google's guidance is that both remain grounded in core Search systems: there are no special technical requirements beyond normal Search eligibility, and no optimization guarantees inclusion. In practice they behave as a generative engine layered on top of SEO fundamentals.

AI visibility

AI visibility is the degree to which an organization is found, cited, included, accurately described, and associated with the right topics when an AI system participates in discovery.

It is multidimensional rather than a single position: an organization may appear as a source, a citation, one option in a comparison, or an association with a specialty. It is also probabilistic. KC AIO measures it through an AI visibility audit and repeat testing.

AIO (Artificial Intelligence Optimization)

AIO is KC AIO's umbrella term for the technical, editorial, entity, authority, and measurement work that helps an organization become findable, understandable, and accurately represented when AI participates in discovery.

Under the umbrella, AEO focuses on becoming a useful direct answer, GEO on remaining coherent inside a generated response, and SEO stays the technical and editorial foundation beneath both. Other practitioners use AIO, AI SEO, and LLMO in overlapping ways; we use AIO as a practical lens, not a claim that an official taxonomy has won. See AI search optimization.

Answer engine

An answer engine is any search or assistant surface that responds to a question with a direct answer rather than a list of links.

"Answer engine" and "generative engine" are not permanent labels on separate products. Google, Bing, Perplexity, ChatGPT, and others can behave as either depending on the query: a definition yields a compact answer, a three-way comparison triggers retrieval and synthesis across sources.

Baseline (observable baseline)

A baseline is a documented record of how an organization appears across a defined prompt set, on specific AI models and surfaces, at a recorded point in time.

Because AI answers vary, a result is treated as an observable baseline rather than a permanent ranking. Later tests are compared against it to judge what actually changed. Establishing the baseline is the purpose of the audit.

Canonical URL

A canonical URL is the single address a site declares as the authoritative version of a page when the same content is reachable at more than one URL.

Search engines consolidate signals to the canonical and generally index that version. A canonical pointing at another domain tells them the other copy is the original. Canonical consistency is part of eligibility and is checked on every priority page during an audit.

Citation

A citation is an explicit reference, usually a link, that an AI-generated answer attaches to a source it drew from.

A page can be cited directly, used as unlinked supporting context, mentioned without a link, or omitted for a source that explains the category more clearly. A citation is not automatically a visit, and a visit is not automatically a customer; citations are tracked as one signal among several in testing.

Clarity (four-layer model, layer 2)

Clarity asks whether a page explicitly explains what the organization offers, for whom, under what conditions, and with what evidence.

It is the second layer of KC AIO's four-layer model, after eligibility and before corroboration and outcomes. Clarity supports direct answers and accurate interpretation; vague marketing language buries the useful answer.

Context field

The context field is the accumulated conversational and user context within which an entity, product, or idea becomes relevant, even when it was not part of the user's original query or explicit intent.

Volume counts mentions; the field is where growth happens. It includes the competitors, contexts, localities, and absences that expand with every answer. Measuring the field, rather than only the terms a customer started with, is the distinctive part of the KC AIO audit.

Corroboration (four-layer model, layer 3)

Corroboration asks whether owned pages, professional profiles, credible third-party references, and structured relationships agree about the same entity.

A website does not define an organization by itself. When a generative system assembles information across sources, agreement between them is what lets it arrive at an accurate picture of who you are. Sources need not repeat identical copy; they should describe a recognizably consistent organization.

Crawlability and indexability

Crawlability is whether a search system can reach and read a page; indexability is whether it is permitted and able to store that page for retrieval.

Both are prerequisites for every other form of visibility. A page that cannot be crawled or indexed cannot become a reliable source for a ranked result, a direct answer, or a citation. They are the first checks in the eligibility layer and the core of technical SEO.

Eligibility (four-layer model, layer 1)

Eligibility asks whether search and answer systems can crawl, index, render, and retrieve the page at all.

It is the technical SEO floor of the four-layer model. Improving eligibility does not guarantee inclusion in any answer; failing it removes the possibility. See crawlability and indexability.

Entity

An entity is a distinct real-world thing, such as an organization, person, product, service, or place, that a search or AI system can recognize and connect facts to.

Entity work verifies that the facts a system attaches to a name belong to the right real-world thing. When names collide, a fluent biography can still describe the wrong human; identification comes before optimization. See The Wrong Scott Allen and sameAs.

Extractability

Extractability is how readily a page's key answer can be lifted out of its surrounding content and still be correct and complete on its own.

A direct-answer sentence that stands alone when quoted, a definition that does not depend on the paragraph around it, and headings that say what the section answers all raise extractability. It supports AEO without reducing a page to a stack of "AI chunks."

Generative engine

A generative engine is a system that retrieves several sources, reconciles them, and composes a new response for the user rather than returning the sources themselves.

The synthesis step changes the visibility question from "did this page rank?" to "was the brand included, was the correct page cited, and was its actual distinction preserved?" See GEO and answer engine.

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)

GEO is the practice of helping a brand, its evidence, and its expertise be selected, represented accurately, and kept distinct when an AI system builds an answer from multiple sources.

The term was formalized in academic work on improving visibility within generative-engine responses. It is not a universal recipe: platforms retrieve, rerank, cite, and synthesize differently, and outputs vary across time, wording, model version, and user. GEO is one lens within AIO.

JSON-LD

JSON-LD is the machine-readable format, embedded in a page's HTML, most commonly used to publish structured data about the page and the entities it describes.

It is an aid to understanding, not a shortcut. JSON-LD does not trigger indexing, cannot rescue contradictory visible content, and should state only relationships the organization can support. See structured data.

Large language model (LLM)

A large language model is the AI system underneath most answer and generative engines, trained to produce fluent text and used, often with live retrieval, to compose responses.

Different models, versions, and retrieval setups produce different answers to the same question. That variance is why KC AIO tests across models and over time rather than treating one screenshot as a result.

Outcomes (four-layer model, layer 4)

Outcomes asks whether a visit produced by visibility actually helps the person decide, and whether the organization can measure that decision honestly.

It is the last layer of the four-layer model. Measurement should connect the discovery surface to observable page behavior and confirmed business results while leaving uncertainty visible. Indexation, qualified impressions, referral paths, and assisted conversions are tracked as separate signals.

Probabilistic visibility

Probabilistic visibility means that appearing in an AI-generated answer is a likelihood that varies with model, version, wording, context, location, and time, not a fixed position that can be held.

Two people can ask nearly the same question and receive different sources. Optimization therefore aims to raise the probability of accurate inclusion, documents the conditions under which results were observed, and avoids promising placement in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or AI Overviews. See Visibility No Longer Has a Single Position.

Prompt set

A prompt set is a documented collection of customer-intent questions, with recorded wording, categories, and intent, that is run repeatedly to observe how an organization appears in AI answers.

Documenting the wording is what makes later comparisons meaningful. The first run of a prompt set becomes the baseline; repeat runs across models and time show what changed. See AI visibility testing.

sameAs

sameAs is a Schema.org property whose value is a URL that unambiguously identifies the same real-world thing, such as a verified LinkedIn profile or an official site.

It is the structured-data tool for entity disambiguation. It should reference only profiles the organization or person actually controls or that authoritatively identify them; a self-referential or speculative sameAs adds no corroboration.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

SEO is the technical and editorial work that makes a website crawlable, indexable, internally discoverable, and useful enough to be ranked and reused by search systems.

AEO and GEO do not replace it. They expand the result surfaces and outcomes that matter. Google's own guidance is that its AI features remain grounded in core Search systems, so the SEO foundation is also the AI-visibility foundation. See technical SEO + content architecture.

Structured data

Structured data is markup, usually Schema.org vocabulary published as JSON-LD, that states in machine-readable form what a page is about and how its entities relate.

Accurate entities matter more than schema volume. Structured data should match what visitors can see, use stable identifiers, and publish only the relationships relevant to the page's purpose. See JSON-LD and sameAs.
